Twins (58-59) vs Mariners (65-50)

Minnesota 58-59
Seattle 65-50

Tonight is the big matchup, Cytana vs King Felix. The Twins try to end their four game losing streak, while the Mariners continue to play well, winning five of six. It's hard to believe that the Twins will be able to turn things around against a team that is playing as well as Seattle is, but I also can't see the Twins big guys sucking as much as they did against Anaheim. The Twins 4-5-6 hitters combined to go 3-35. Justin Morneau (1-12). Torii Hunter (2-11). Michael Cuddyer (1-12).

Monday:
Santana (12-9, 2.98, 1.05, .218) vs Hernandez (8-6, 3.97, 1.40, .286)
Tuesday:
Garza (1-3, 1.70, 1.19, .239) vs Ramirez (7-3, 7.12, 1.85, .337)
Wednesday:
Baker (6-5, 4.76, 1.24, .267) vs Washburn (8-9, 4.30, 1.39, .274)

Mauer last night, 3-4 with 2 RBI's. Hunter 1-4, Morneau 1-4, Cuddyer 0-4. Morneau admitted before the game to being more fatigued than he's ever been as a professional.

Minnesota scored 3 runs or less for the 11th time in 12 games. While it was nice to see the Twins score more then 1 run in a game, it sucked that Sexson had to hit that HR in the bottom of the ninth to win it. Guerrier was the victim, in yet another case where we sit and wonder why Nathan, who hasn't pitched since Aug 5th, wasn't pitching the ninth.

Santana: 7IP, 7H, 3ER, 0BB, 4K
Hernandez: 6IP, 4H, 1ER, 2BB, 6K

Jayson Stark: Twins must decide what to do with Santana

So what will become of the Best Pitcher in the Solar System? What will become of the great Johan Santana?

It is a question the baseball world has been pondering for months. It is a question the baseball world will keep on pondering as long as the Best Pitcher in the Solar System remains an employee of the Minnesota Twins.

They need to keep him. But can they possibly keep him?

They need to sign him. But can they possibly sign him?

Torii Hunter:

Sizing up the mood, Hunter said, "I don't know what's wrong, don't know what happened. Don't know if it was [trading] Luis Castillo, or the comments from Johan, or what. But something negative has hit this clubhouse. Something's not right."

Yeah, how about all of the negative comments from you, Torii, we're all sick of your attitude this year.

But he's right. Baseball just isn't fun to watch when the players aren't having fun, and you can tell it's been a long season for all of them.

Stick and Ball Guy

A lot of the Twins’ offensive suckitude this season has come in the second half of the season, where the Twins have “hit” .253/.308/.377 as a team. For comparison, Luis Rivas, in his career, has hit .262/.307/.383. Perhaps that best describes what it’s been like to watch this team’s offense since the All-Star break–it’s like watching Luis Rivas hit over and over and over again. Sure, maybe he’ll have a good night in KC, but mainly he’s a waste of time.

That would be really funny if it wasn't so true.

Something happened yesterday. I don't know if I should admit it to you, but I will.

I saw that the Mariners beat the Twins and I felt okay about it. Even happy.

A few things came together to make that happen.

First, if you remember my lots-of -home-teams theory (cheer for MN, Seattle, and the Bay Area, you always have some winner), I was just going with the hot team, like a fair-weather fan.

Second, I'm just getting excited to be in Seattle. Less than a month.

Third, damn, the Twins are frustrating. Even from afar and just watching the box scores. I know that their pitching is young and their role players can't hit enough to help when the studs aren't carrying the team, but man, they should be winning more. I really don't get them.

That said, I'd hate to see the team dissolve in the offseason. They could be pretty good next year if they don't lose anyone and they get a passable DH. Liriano should be back and the rest of the pitching staff would have some experience. They'd actually look pretty good. But they'll lose at least one stud this offseason and probably be mediocre again.

That's what is so frustrating. This isn't a bad team. We have Santana, Nathan, Neshek, Hunter, Morneau, Mauer - guys that are all excellent baseball players. They just haven't all been on at the same time like they were last year.

We can blame Ryan all we want for not making changes, but this team should have been better and I just don't know what happened. It's like last year was so amazing and they had so much fun, that this year was just an emotional let down from the very start and they could never recover.

As for you being happy with Seattle winning, I must say I'm a little disappointed!

Nothing like an 11 run anomaly to wake up to this morning.

I can see the beauty in what Chris is saying about having some home teams. Nice to have Seattle, MN, Oakland A'$, and the San Francisco Old Guys to follow out there. Some good stories every night. But I have a harder time relating out here with the Red Sox although they're somewhat likeable. There's always an aura of "Evil Empire Jr." Not to mention that unpredictable mood swings of the "Nation."

Besides, I feel too much of an allegiance to the Twins to put any effort into another team.

However, it would certainly be less stressful to be a fan in general, rather than a Twins fan exclusively, which is probably what Chris is getting at.

Obviously the Twins need to find a way to keep Santana around. His comments of frustration seem a lot more acceptable than Hunter's. Torii is way out of line to look for distractions as an excuse for out-and-out terrible play by his Twins' offense. Even if he's right, that attitude is deplorable.

Take that Chris. That's what you get for cheering against the Twins!

Thanks win the season series against Seattle 5-1, by winning the last two games 11-3 and 6-1. Torii hit a huge grand slam in the top of the ninth yesterday, after also driving in the game winning run in the 8th. Baker and Garza both looked great in the games.

The Twins finally come home after a brutal road trip (3-6). They are now 60-60 for the year and 6 games out of first.
